Food Science and Technology Centre

Introducing our

Food Science and Technology Centre

It is with great excitement that we announce that our new Food Science and Technology Centre is now up and running! Our School Council, architects and the Department of Education have collaborated to develop and build this new facility for our children and involves the expenditure of a $540,000 grant from our State Government. Classes are now using the facility to cook and learn about nutrition as well as for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.(STEAM) Continue down the page to see some photos of this new facility.

Here are some quick facts about the project:
-> All classes F-6 use the building regularly to cook delicious healthy food and work on science, technology and arts activities.
-> It will be used year round.
-> It has a servery incorporated into the design.
-> The building is of brick construction and is designed specifically with the needs of our children in mind.

The plan to the left shows the interior of the new facility. We’ve designed it with the sizes and ages of the children in mind and with all the innovations you’d expect. The ovens, cooktops, fridges, freezers, sinks and range hoods are all of excellent quality. The bench tops, preparation areas and joinery are all designed with safety and functionality as a priority. The design is fully approved by the Department of Education and Training and includes landscaping and the covered outdoor eating area for use on days when the weather is great. Exciting times!

What Will the Children Learn?

The children will learn about healthy foods and how best to prepare them. They'll prepare, cook and of course eat the food they cook. They'll enjoy the food together with their teachers. They'll cooperate, work together, follow instructions and enjoy each other's company. It will be used for events such as Market Night and programs such as Breakfast Club.
This will be a tremendous asset for our school community.

The children will work in teams at their preparation bench to follow the instructions required to create the menu.

They'll learn about the science associated with cooking. How ingredients change with heating or cooling, safe food handling and preserving food.
They'll learn about the technology used to cook and keep food .

They'll learn about the maths needed for cooking and keeping food. Temperatures, weights, measures, quantities, volume, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are all part of preparing ingredients for cooking.

They'll incorporate a wide range of literacy skills in their use of the Centre. They'll read recipes, write reports, research food and its origins. They'll create presentations and incorporate ICT.
